Walk into any convenience store in Dublin and compare the chiller to five years ago. The plain ham roll is still there, but it has company: protein pots, high-protein wraps, yoghurt drinks with the protein number on the front. The category did not appear from nowhere.
What is driving it
- Tracking apps. A large share of gym-goers now know their daily protein number. Once someone knows their number, they shop for it.
- Gym membership growth. More people training more often means more people looking for food immediately before or after.
- Lunch is a solo decision. Hybrid working shifted a lot of lunch out of canteens and into whatever shop is nearest.
- Front-of-pack numbers sell. A protein figure on the label does the selling in the two seconds a shopper looks at the shelf.
What it means for a retailer
Three practical things we see working in stores that get this right:
- Block the range together. High-protein packs sell better beside each other than scattered through the sandwich fixture. Shoppers looking for protein are looking for a section, not a product.
- Eye level, near the till. These are impulse-adjacent purchases made in a hurry.
- Stock across the day. Post-gym demand is early morning and evening, not just the 12–2 lunch peak. An empty chiller at 6pm is a missed sale to your most repeat-prone customer.
Where Gym Fuel fits
Gym Fuel was built for that block: six SKUs, all 20g+ protein, all under 500 calories, in colour-coded packs that read from a metre away. Handmade daily in Dublin by Freshways and delivered chilled nationwide, ROI and NI.
